Yesterday was the midterm elections, and 20 new governors were elected in the United States, including seven Democrats who wrestled control of the governor’s mansion away from Republicans. Considering most marijuana legalization laws occur at the state level, it’s probably a good idea to see how the new governors feels about cannabis.
So here’s where every new governor elected yesterday stands on marijuana legalization:
California – Democrat Gavin Newsom
Supports recreational marijuana legalization.
Alaska – Republican Mike Dunleavy
Says he has no plans to change Alaska’s legalized marijuana laws.
Idaho – Republican Brad Little
Does not support legalizing recreational or medical marijuana.
Nevada – Democrat Steve Sisolak
Supports legalizing recreational marijuana and creating clearer regulations in Nevada.
Wyoming – Republican Mark Gordon
Does not support legalizing recreational or medical marijuana.
Colorado – Democrat Jared Polis
Supports recreational marijuana.
New Mexico – Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham
Supports legalizing recreational marijuana.
Oklahoma – Republican Kevin Stitt
Does not support recreational marijuana, but will work to implement medical marijuana in the state.
Kansas – Democrat Laura Kelly
Supports medical marijuana and changing sentencing guidelines, says recreational marijuana is far in the future for Kansas.
South Dakota – Republican Kristi Noem
Does not support legalizing recreational or medical marijuana.
Minnesota – Democrat Tim Walz
Supports legalizing recreational marijuana.
Wisconsin – Democrat Tony Evers
Supports legalizing medical marijuana and believes Wisconsin should hold a statewide vote to determine what to do about recreational marijuana.
Illinois – Democrat J.B. Pritzker
Supports legalizing recreational marijuana
Michigan – Democrat Gretchen Whitmer
Supports legalizing recreational marijuana
Ohio – Republican Mike DeWine
Does not support legalizing recreational marijuana.
Tennessee – Republican Bill Lee
Does not support legalizing recreational or medical marijuana.
Florida – Republican Ron DeSantis
Will work to better implement medical marijuana in Florida, but does not support legalizing recreational marijuana.
Georgia – Republican Brian Kemp
Supports a limited expansion of medical marijuana in the state, but doesn’t want to allow cannabis to be grown in Georgia and also opposes decriminalizing marijuana.
Connecticut – Democrat Ned Lamont
Supports legalizing recreational marijuana.
Maine – Democrat Janet Mills
Supports legalizing recreational marijuana and allowing the state to begin recreational sales.
